During our storytime, we'll be exploring books that feature black children in nature, along with other timeless favorites because:
"A lot of beloved storybook characters scavenge food in the wild, go on bear hunts, and otherwise explore the natural world, and almost all of them are white...Of all the picture books about children exploring the wild outdoors for fun, only a scarce few feature African American kids as protagonists." The Environmental Trail at Kennesaw Mountain explores the natural landscape on the mountain’s northwestern slope. It’s a great hike through a beautiful forest, exploring a wide diversity of trees and wildlife habitats, enormous boulders, and a meandering creek. And with illustrated signs that explain the surrounding forest systems, wildlife, and geology, it’s a great, educational, kid-friendly hike for families with kids and adults alike.
Trail info & time: We won't be walking up the mountain. This trail shares the same parking lot, but it's a fairly flat 1.3 mile walk. We will meet at 10:00 AM for storytime, and afterward, we will head onto the trail. Some families & children may choose to remain at the picnic tables for crafts and/or free play, so the walk is OPTIONAL.
Cost: Parking is $5. Please allow time for parking, as you may have to circle the lot a few times before finding a spot. There's also an overflow parking lot at 1200 Old 41 Hwy NW, Kennesaw if you can't find parking in the main lot.
What to bring: BRING WATER! Feel free to pack a lunch or snack to eat while we're there. Bring a baby carrier if you have an infant, or you think your toddler will tire of walking. The trail is NOT stroller-friendly.
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS: Park at Kennesaw Mountain visitor center and meet at the picnic tables to the right (in the BACK of the parking lot) when you first pull into the lot (not the ones next to the building). If you're facing the visitor center building, we will be BEHIND you on the back side of the parking lot. Text me at 404-444-2857 if you have any problems upon arrival.
