Event Details
The Heritage Homeschoolers are taking a field trip to the Michael C. Carlos Museum, affiliated with Emory University. We will be getting a 1-hour specialized tour about archaeology for homeschoolers of all ages.
Archaeology | All Grades (STEAM, Social Studies, Visual Art: As they explore the galleries, students will hear about pioneering archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon and the development of stratigraphy at the ancient site of Jericho. They will learn about the methods archaeologists use to analyze objects once they have come out of the ground, including drawing, x-ray, chemical analysis, carbon-14 dating, and other scientific techniques that contribute to the understanding of material culture. Bonus Opportunity: Once the tour concludes, our families, if they choose, will then have the opportunity for an even more enriching experience. While we are there, and during the week of September 3 - 6, the Carlos Museum will host monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery for their annual Mystical Arts of the Tibet tour. For these four days, at no extra cost, museumgoers will have the opportunity to learn about Buddhism and interact with the members of this monastery as they work to create a mandala, a task they will accomplish over their days at the museum. This opportunity can be particularly beneficial to families with a general curiosity about other cultures or who are initiating religious, cultural, or geographical studies about South Asia in their home curriculum.
